MMS Serves

MMServes Mason Christian Village
Posted on 11/26/2019

On November 23, two school buses of Mason Middle School students and their families arrived at Mason Christian Village excited to hang out with residents, and to roll up their sleeves as part of the Mason Christian Village cleaning crew! Seventh and eighth graders and residents played modified kickball with pool noodles, volleyball with balloons, painted, and sang Christmas Carols.

Principal Lauren Gentene notes how important it is to give teens the opportunity to serve; sharing how giving back is critical for growing empathy and can help connect families.

"When I interviewed [for the MMS principal position two years ago] I had a 90-day, 1-year, and 5-year strategy. I remain committed to the values, philosophies, and the laser focus on student growth, but many parts of those documents seem irrelevant now. Buried in those plans, though, was the idea of quarterly community service projects. We have done two - one for each quarter in the 2019-2020 school year - and they have quickly become parts of "the plan" that I won't let go of," said MMS Principal Lauren Gentene. "Parents, if you are wondering how to connect with your teenagers or wondering how to connect in a meaningful way with your child's school and teachers - this it it. We will help organize and facilitate the quarterly MMServes event for our MMS families, but I also encourage you to find your own and build this into your family's rhythm."

MMS parent Shannon Wielinga wrote on the district's Facebook page, "Thank you for the opportunity for our children!! It’s a win-win for all involved!"

In September, MMS students and families helped clean up community parks. The next MMServes is in February, and will be at Matthew 25 ministries.
