This summer, Mason Middle School seventh grade teacher Renee McCord was selected to attend the American Wilderness Leadership School (AWLS) in Jackson, Wyoming. She even documented her Daily Ecological Reflections and Thoughts throughout the week-long experience.
"As a lifelong learner and science teacher I believe in digging deep into my own understanding in order to enrich my depth of knowledge about science and how our world works," explained McCord.
The AWLS was established in 1976 and has served as an opportunity for educators to engage in hands-on outdoor education activities they can experience and bring back to their classroom.
"In my classroom, I try to build those stepping stones and bridges to make connections from our past to help inspire students presently and to encourage them to always strive for their hopes and dreams for their future," said McCord.
The trip is hosted by the Safari Club International Foundation, and McCord submitted an essay when she applied for the camp and scholarship.
"From journaling, small group conversations, to encouragement of taking a chance to try something new, I am working with kids to make not just small connections, but larger connections with how they can influence their class, their community and even the entire world," added McCord.
The focus of AWLS is on the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation and teaching applicable conservation lessons to bring back to the classroom, not just in science, but across all content areas for students. Attendees participate in a variety of activities throughout the week, activities/topics include: Wildlife ecology and conservation, outdoor survival, stream ecology, National Archery in Schools Program Certification (NASP), Project Wild Curriculum, Fly Tying and Fly Fishing, Yellowstone Ecology, and Whitewater Rafting down Snake River.
"It was a wonderful opportunity for me as a science educator as well as an individual that loves to learn!" shared McCord. "My hope is to use this experience to tether my learners knowledge to experiences that can make them feel connected to our global Earth. In a time where our digital play and presence is so very strong I want to bring back to my school and classroom the importance of curiosity, questioning and play in our great outdoors."
