Devaney and SchatzThis spring, Mason Early Childhood Center first and second grade Intervention Specialist Janine Schatz and Mason Middle School Language Arts teacher Laura Devaney were honored at the Area Progress Council's 31st Annual Project Excellence dinner at the Warren County Career Center on Wednesday, May 2.

Schatz was nominated for the award by fellow teachers and parents.

“What has always stood out the most to me about Janine, is that her roles as an educator extend beyond the students on her caseload. She makes it a point to know and support our toughest student needs throughout a building of 2,000 students. There is not a teacher in our building who has not relied on her valuable advice over the years," shared fellow MECC Intervention Specialist, and 2017 Project Excellence winner, Katie Brosnan. "What is more impressive is that if Janine has to step out to support another teacher or student, her classroom continues to run about as smooth and efficiently as it does with her there. Her strengths in strategic modeling 'lead by example' practices, and her supportive mentoring can be observed through all of the paraprofessionals and therapists working in her room."

Devaney was nominated by fellow MMS Assistant Principal, Becky Cornett.

“Laura is known for meeting students where they are, individualizing their instruction, and maintaining high expectations. One of her educational philosophies is to get the student to the point they are feeling success and then grow them a little more," shared Cornett. "Laura strives to make personal connections with her students and build meaningful relationships with each of them. She takes the time to ask about their lives, interests and motivations. Establishing connections with her students helps facilitate an environment of safety, security, and encouragement in which her students feel valued."

Personal characteristics of Project Excellence winners include consistency, friendliness, possessing value of other's feelings, self-confidence, organization, imagination, and of course, a joy of teaching.
