Mason Middle School science teacher Dan Little was recently chosen as the recipient of the Celebrate Excellence Award sponsored by the Hamilton County Education Foundation. The award recognizes excellent professionals in public education.

Little's innovative leadership, his care for getting his eighth grade students excited about mastering science concepts, and his collaborative efforts to help other teachers grow professionally led to him being recognized with the award.

The Celebrate Excellence Educator Recognition Breakfast was held on May 13 at the Sharonville Convention Center. Twenty-three professionals representing public schools were recognized for their impact on the districts they serve.

“Mr. Little embraces innovation and learning!  He is not afraid to take calculated risks and try new ideas to improve student learning. He works everyday to find new ways to help his students get excited about mastering their science content through the use of standards based learning and assessments along with technology resources to support students.  Dan believes in clearly identifying learning goals for his students, outlining pathways of instruction, identifying materials needed to introduce and reinforce those concepts, and teaching students how to monitor and assess their mastery of the skills,” said Tonya McCall, MMS Principal. One of his students, Christopher Mann, also nominated Mr. Little. "Mr. Little is the greatest teacher I have had or ever will have. He has helped create a classroom that is a fun place by introducing cutting edge lessons using Chromebooks and technical applications. He is always willing to put himself out there which is shown by the retake system... But most importantly, Mr. Little has made me a better Man, Person and Student so far this year."

This year, Little initiated the Mason Middle School Tech Development Club - a professional development group led by teachers for teachers that highlights tools to improve educators' effectiveness and efficiency.

"He created a website for staff to access his blog dedicated to professional learning through teacher posted ideas, professional videos, articles, as well as tips and feedback of various resources. In addition, he hosts a monthly teacher-led PD session for staff to come and learn about a new idea. Dan Little is a building leader who embraces the Middle School’s professional development theme this year…'Today is a good day to get better!' He truly embodies the innovation, collaboration and excellence that are the hallmarks of our greatest educators," said McCall.
