Bus stops are usually located at corners or cross streets.  A variety of factors go into the process of determining the location of bus stops such as:

• Student density.  A central location for the majority of students being serviced by a stop, usually at a corner.
  • PK and K students will be placed at a stop closer to their homes due to the need for a responsible adult to meet them at the bus stop.
  • Older elementary students may walk up to .25 mile to a stop. Middle school and high school students may walk up to .5 mile to a stop. This could mean there are only one or two stops within a neighborhood. 

• Safety
  • We look at the physical locations to make sure the stops are safe.  Some neighborhoods do not have sidewalks, we still put stops at corners so students may stand on a side street or in a student’s driveway. We cannot put stops at a residence where no students reside.
  • Cul de sacs present safety issues and we do not enter cul de sacs except for students with special needs as required by law. 
  • We avoid situations that require the backing of a school bus (turnarounds) as much as possible.
  • Bus stops can only be made at residential addresses or licensed day care facilities. Buses may not stop at places of business.
