Priyanka YenuguMason Intermediate School fourth grader Priyanka Yenugu placed second in the 2016 PBS Kids Writers & Illustrators Contest.

The PBS KIDS Writers & Illustatrators Contest is produced by PBS and is based on the Reading Rainbow® Young Writers and Illustrators Contest, a concept developed by WNED. It is for children in kindergarten through third grade who want to create their own story with exciting plots and expressive illustrations.

Yenugu's story, My Surprise Christmas Present!!, was well-written and illustrated enough to catch the eyes of the judges and earn the second place prize, a professional art kit. Select stories were also chosen for inclusion in on-air promotions, and all entrants receive a certificate, a storybook, and an invitation to attend a reception at the local PBS Studios.

Here is a little piece from My Surprise Christmas Present!!:

"Yes, it ‘s here. It’s finally here… Christmas!!!”, I said.

I was super excited. I couldn’t wait till I see my parents.

After dinner I was putting my note to Santa and thought, “Wow! Santa and his elves are working so hard. If they give us presents why can’t we help them with a few?”

I changed my note a little… actually a lot… I changed my entire note."

Priyanka's mom, Mavi, notes that the family is grateful to the Mason educators in her daughter's life. "We would like to thank all the teachers for their constant support in helping Priyanka be successful!"
