MMS Band Director Hinson Receives National Band Director AwardCongratulations to Mason Middle School Band Director Zach Hinson who received the 2017 American School Band Directors Association (ASBDA) Foundation's Outstanding Potential Award for Young Directors. Kathy McGrady, Present-Elect of the Ohio Music Educators Association, nominated Hinson and presented the award on May 10 during the MMS Symphonic Winds Spring Concert. Watch Hinson receive the award.

“We have incredible students at Mason, and this award is a reflection of all the great learning that we do together in the classroom,” said Hinson. “As I teach my students, I continue to learn new things about myself and my teaching every day. I am also lucky to have world-class colleagues in the Mason Band team, who all love learning new ways to reach our students together.”

The ASBDA Foundation Outstanding Potential Award was designed to honor outstanding bandmasters who have distinguished themselves early in their careers and who demonstrate the professional standards and artistic qualities upheld by the American School Band Directors Association. Candidates are nominated by a current ABSDA member and must be within the first five years of teaching or a current student teacher, and should exhibit the qualities of a future outstanding director.

Hinson, a 2008 Mason graduate, joined the district’s instrumental music staff in 2014. He currently teaches the seventh and eighth grade concert bands and jazz bands, and instructs the woodwind section of the William Mason High School Marching Band. He completed his student teaching in Springfield Local Schools with McGrady as his mentor, and received his Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Bowling Green State University.
