The purpose of the additional language and instructional services ELS is the Ohio Department of Education and described in detail here. Translate to allow for English language development and meaningful access to subject matter content. Such supports are deigned at the district level and are specific to each school.
Mason's EL support is based on the philosophy of inclusion and participation in the regular classroom to the maximum extent possible. Each EL is assigned to his or her age-appropriate level classroom. The student attends regular classes in the content areas and receives additional support as needed based on language and academic needs. Thus, the amount of language support given will differ with each student and ranges from daily support (small group and in-class) to consultations with content teachers. Appropriate services are provided to ensure students' development of English language proficiency and access to the curriculum. Many EL receive allowable instruction and assessment modifications and accommodations of their daily work as well as state testing. The district has 13 EL teachers and 11 EL paraprofessionals (2020-2021 team members) serving EL.
